About

A factory that stayed a factory

CALZANTE has made women's footwear in Civitanova Marche since 1994. It has never carried its own retail brand, and that is a deliberate decision rather than an omission.

The company began as a closing room taking work from larger factories in the district, and moved into full production in 1998 when it bought the building on Via delle Concerie. The province has lost a great many footwear businesses since then. The ones that survived mostly did it by going upmarket, by going small, or both, and that is what happened here.

Why there is no CALZANTE label in shops

A manufacturer that also sells its own brand competes with its clients. We decided early that we would rather be trusted with a designer's last than sell three hundred pairs a season under our own name. It also means we can say no to a project without a commercial motive behind the refusal.

What has changed since 1994

  • Minimum runs came down, from 400 pairs to 60, because that is where new labels actually are.
  • Development got longer. Two prototype rounds are standard now; in the nineties one was normal.
  • Adhesives went water-based across the floor in 2019.
  • Material declarations became routine paperwork rather than a special request.

The district

Le Marche, Italy has made shoes for a century and a half, and the reason a factory this size can operate here is the network around it: heel injection twenty minutes away, tanneries within a morning's drive, component suppliers who understand a shoe rather than a purchase order. Working outside a district like this one, we would be a different and worse business.

How we work with clients

Directly, in English or Italian, with the same two people from first enquiry through to shipping. No agents, no minimum contract term, and no exclusivity clause on either side. If your volumes outgrow us we will say so and, where we can, point you at a larger factory in the district.
